What image size do I have to upload / does Viewbook display?

The maximum allowed filesize you can upload to Viewbook is 20MB. All images are converted to JPEG files in the sRGB color space, except for the Original, we leave it untouched. Viewbook supports jpeg, png and tiff files.

As you upload images they're resized by Viewbook (if necessary) in the following sizes:

    * Small - 320 pixels
* Medium - 640 pixels
* Large - 1024 pixels
* HD - 1920 pixels
* The original size, without compression

If you want to use the high quality original for print or delivery

Then upload your file in high resolution with little to no compression. Preferably as JPEG, since with TIFF files you will easily exceed the 20MB file size limit.

If you want your images to load faster

Add a little jpeg compression (quality 70 to 95, depending on the images' need). Viewbook compresses to quality 95 when resizing your images.

What size do we use for display?

The size in which we display your images is depending on the context. All in all, on a page, the size mostly won't exceed 1024 pixels. However, with an album, and the same goes for when in full screen, the images can be shown in a size up to 1920x1080 pixels.

If you upload images smaller than 1024 pixels Viewbook uses the original image size for display in the presentations. When showing images in the presentations the 'Large' size is used. Images scale automatically to the available screen size, and will never be scaled up.

HD size for large displays and retina iPad

When you enable 'HD images' in your album styling window and upload your images in the bounds of 1024x1024 up to 1920×1080 pixels max, your images will be displayed in this size on large screens. On smaller displays and in your site pages Viewbook automatically grabs your smaller resized images for optimal loading speed. When viewing your album on the retina iPad, the HD files will also be loaded if applicable. We’ve enabled the HD resolution in december 2009.

Read more about image display on the retina iPad.

Image size on Album pages

Images are scaled automatically. When you choose the 'top layout' on an Album page (see http://www.iancuttler.com). The height of the image is 0.666666 times the width. So you can upload images with 1024*682 pixels and they will fit perfectly.

Thumbnail sizes portfolio pages
The thumbnails on the portfolio pages are placed inside containers of:

    * Small - width:272px, height:130px;
* Wide - width:550px, height:130px;
* Large - width:550px, height:350px;

Images are scaled automatically. The 'Small' thumbnail uses the 320px wide image. The 'Wide' and 'Large' versions use the 640px wide image.

All image heights are variable.

HD size is shown above (in the green box, under 'As you upload images they're resized by Viewbook (if necessary) in the following sizes:') as 1980 pixels.  However, further down this page, under 'HD size for large displays', HD size is shown as 1920 pixels.  Which is correct? (I would like to upload the correct size to avoid further re-scaling in Viewbook).

Concerning original delivery : usually a full size double page (A3) is a 50Mb TIFF so lots of press agency and professional clients ask for a 50Mb original wich would be a better size limit concerning viewbook if one want to use this feature to deliver full size uncompressed original to ones clients . don't you think so ? is really band width and storage an issue nowadays ? lots of professionnal photo website hosting offer quite unlimited storage option wich is not the case of viewbook for the moment.

Could we hope for a near future increasing of the size and number of file we could host in a viewbook account ?

thx for your attention

O

ps by the way concerning the view side only the way viewbook resize and deliver picture in portfolio is one of the best/fastest available on the market for the moment to my point of view !!!

Thanks Olivier. We'll be allowing bigger file sizes in the near future. It just requires some software changes.

We hear different requirements, 20/25 MB jpeg's max for magazines. We hear .tiff is being used less those days. All comments are welcome.

True, that for magazines and press it's changing  because people there are used to the digital delivery but if you're working with the clients directly (in advertising for example) they tend to still prefer 50 mb tiff here in france... things are changing but slowly !! so maybe in a near future we won't use tiff anymore but for the moment it's still not the case for some clients.

so true it's not a major issue for most of the people, and maybe increasing the total number of photo allowed would be better than increasing what is allowed in term of size for each unique file...

Thanks Oliver. Very clear.  We'll keep continue to support .tiff files.

HD images are displayed automatically on larger screens now. No need to activate it anymore.

I uploaded images that are 1024px but when I add the album to a page the images do not display at their true size and I have a 25" monitor so if they are set to scale shouldn't they show at 1024? I've seen some of the example websites and they have albums that are much larger than 1024px but they are showing at around 700-800px I think. Thanks!

Hi. I am currently trying to set up albums onto a page with medium size thumbnails. Are there dimensions for the Medium size container? Or do the mudium thumbnails work differently to the small, wide and large sizes? Thanks.

The dimensions of the medium container are  270x130 and 270x250 for the medium square.

I know the article lists 270x130 as the small size, but that is the "old" small size.  Now it is medium.  Small is now 160x125.

I would love the images to be viewed at the same size horizontally and vertically without having to go into full screen.

It would be great to able to dictate the image size you want displayed.

Unfortunately, there currently is no way to manually specify the dimensions of the gallery/images. The upcoming Viewbook V3 will enable you to do tweaks like this. For more info on the progress of V3, check v3.viewbook.com.
